Dating on a Budget

Ladies and gentlemen, there’s no sugarcoating it – we live in challenging times. Things are tough. People around the world are tightening their belts, many are struggling, and nearly everyone seems to have money on their mind. The general zeitgeist of today is frugality. But still, life goes on. We persevere and we press on. We may be thinking a bit more economically these days but we still manage to live our lives to the best of our abilities. At times, it may require sacrifices and a few touches of creativity here and there but we still find ways to do all of the things that we love to do. We still work out. We still keep up with technology. And despite it all, we still have fun.

I say all of that to say this: young people love to have fun. Boredom is like kryptonite to us. Whether it’s an activity as extreme as skydiving or one as pleasantly pleasing as enjoying a good book, we thrive on finding entertainment. Having to deal with the massive pressures presented by school, work, and our impending futures, we need to enjoy ourselves from time to time. And what better way to do that than with our friends? Hanging out, especially on dates, provides an opportunity to get away from regular life; it gives a chance to enter your own little world for a while. Now, you may be thinking “Dating is expensive”. Well, it doesn’t have to be. And luckily for you, I’ve compiled a quick guide of fun yet budget-friendly outings. These dates are carefully designed to be thrifty without looking thrifty. I’ve consulted members of both genders and received a unanimous seal of approval so fear not – you’re in good hands.
Going to dinner and a movie
It used to be that a good first date would involve dinner, a movie, and maybe a bowl of ice cream afterward. Well, times have changed. Minimum wage is $7.25 and movie theater tickets are $10 and up. I’m not a mathematician but that just doesn’t add up. With the proliferation of 3D, two movie tickets alone could set you back $30!
Enter Netflix. With a Netflix subscription or, perhaps even better, a Redbox venue nearby, a cash-conscious young person could slash costs exponentially. What’s even better is that watching a movie at home provides you with the chance to cook dinner together. What’s more romantic than that? It shows that you are fun and attentive, big points for any big night.
Going on a picnic
Usually, you'll want to get out of the house. Picnics are a tried and true technique that goes back to my central thesis: preparing your own food will save you a ton of money. I mean, let’s face it – taking advantage of the Dollar Menu at McDonald’s isn’t going to win you any style points. Picnics show that you are both romantic and versatile.
Taking a walk
Few things show that you care like spending time just talking. A long walk down a scenic trail or through a park presents a chance to get to really know someone – their hopes and dreams and wants and fears.  As an added bonus, you get free exercise. The best things in life really canbe free….
Playing a game
Not everyone enjoys video games so beware with this one. The safe bet would be to find something mutually enjoyable that’s outside of a house. I suggest go-kart racing, laser tag, or mini golf. These activities show that you’re fun and accessible. Sports can also be an option.
Going on an adventure
Grab some snacks, take an afternoon, and just go. You can explore new places, find new hangouts, and generally have a great time. Something as everyday as journeying across the neighborhood can be magical and have deeper meaning with a like-minded person in your company. This shows that you can be fun and spontaneous. No matter if you’re on foot, on bike, or in a vehicle, you can find adventure in unexpected places if you look hard enough.
These are just a few ideas to get you started. There are no doubt many, many more. All of the scenarios mentioned above are intended to promote togetherness and cost little-to-no money. If I may say so, I feel rather proud of myself for coming up with this. I feel like I've filled a niche. I should have this guide copyrighted ("Tysonn's Tips"....) but I’m giving it to you free of charge because I’m such a nice guy. At any rate, use this guide wisely. I would recommend printing it out and keeping it close at hand - in a backpack, wallet, purse.... You never know when it might come in handy. Happy dating!

  1. Haha... I agree. As a female, I enjoy staying in and cooking with somebody, or just going on a picnic rather than going to a nasty movie theatre anyways. Also, some drive-ins are cheaper too and you can bring your own snacks :D
